My child is only two. Will I find the book useful now?

Yes. Sexuality is a positive and core part of children's development. Many books on children's sexuality are either written for children or are for parents of 10 to 15-year-olds - the age parents traditionally begin to talk to their children about puberty and sex. Waiting until your child is ten before considering their sexuality is too late. We recommend that you think about your child's sexual development much earlier - from birth. We encourage you to foster communication from birth so that when your child reaches puberty you have established a comfortable two-way communication about sexuality.

      Why start so young?

Some parents are surprised that we advise starting sexuality education so young. Of course very young children don't need to know about sex. However you can help your child if you are aware of the sexual development that is occurring. They do need to know their body is special, to know how to express their feelings, to feel good about being a girl or boy, and to be aware of the changes puberty will bring. These are aspects of their sexuality, as opposed to knowing about sex.

Is this book relevant to me?

The examples and experiences are from New Zealand, and include Samoan, Maori and Fijian stories. Our international readers say this is a strength not a drawback. All experience is local to somewhere and New Zealand is a progressive society. Today all states and countries are multicultural, and reference in the book to other nationalities is part of this inclusive approach.

Is it recommended by experts in the field?

From Birth to Puberty is written specifically for parents and others taking responsibility for children. However a large number of our readers are health professionals and early childhood educators who find it an excellent reference in their work with parents and families. Check the reviews for professional opinion.

      Who is the publisher?
